% Text of the abstract

Consider any spatially dependent BGK wave
of period P of the Vlasov-Poisson system.
A remarkable result of Zhiwu Lin asserts
that it is {\it always} unstable,
at least under perturbations of period 2P.
I will discuss this theorem and its proof.
