Optimal TranspOrt and large Deviations for Deep LEarning theory

OTODDLE is a FIS 3 Consolidator Grant funded by MUR. The project aims at developing rigorous mathematical foundations for modern Deep Learning, combining tools from probability theory (large deviations, quantitative limit theorems), optimal transport, analysis, and statistical learning theory, with a strong interface to numerics and high-performance scientific computing.

Research themes

The project focuses on topics at the interface of:

  • Probability theory: large deviations, quantitative central limit theorems, concentration
  • Statistical / mathematical learning theory: generalization, scaling limits, implicit regularization
  • Analysis: optimal transport, convex analysis, ODE/PDE methods
  • Computation: numerics for optimization and stochastic processes, simulations at scale, reproducible pipelines

Several openings are expected during the project (details and official calls will follow).

Starting from 2026

  • 3+ Postdoctoral positions (contratto di ricerca)
    Profiles in probability / optimal transport / learning theory / analysis / numerics are welcome.
  • 1 PhD position in Pure Mathematics (topics aligned with OTODDLE)
  • 1 IT Technician position (4 years)
    Supporting the project’s computational infrastructure:
    • server and software maintenance
    • support for numerics and simulations
    • HPC workflows and research support

Starting from 2027

  • 1 PhD position in High Performance Scientific Computing
    Focus on large-scale numerics, simulation pipelines, and scientific computing for stochastic optimization.
